Renewing Your Makeup Kit

The best tricks for renewing your makeup kit. A few simple tips to put everything in order!

Renew your make up case. Save time in the mornings!

Empty your toiletry bag and put some order in it!

-Discard all broken products.

-Discard all products beyond their use-by date.

-Check the expiry date on each product. Make up products, once open, should be discarded according to their ingredients. Follow these guidelines:

-Mascara: about three-four months after opening. If you use it a lot it may be that it doesn’t even last three months.

-All texture products in powder form such as shadow, matt powders and foundation -last about two years.

-Foundation in cream form, correctors, shadows or rouges in cream form: these last about a year and a half.

-Lipsticks: about two years.

-Lip gloss: about two years. See when the color or texture changes; it is possible that if you have exposed it to temperature changes then it may have gone off.

-Check the product packaging, a symbol such as this one normally appears and besides it a number and M ( for months). The number tells you the number of months for which the product will last in a perfect state once opened. It is also important for you to ask when you buy. Products which last over 36 months will not have this symbol.

-Face creams and cleansers have different shelf lives, depending on their ingredients- They can last from 3 to 12 or 24 months.

Clean all your products with a damp towel, and dry them with a soft cloth. They will come out looking new.

Don’t forget to clean all your brushes, and you’ll see how much easier it is to put make up on. Here’s how:

Natural hair brushes.

Clean them with a mild shampoo, with a neutral fragrance.

Rinse them in cold or lukewarm water (avoid using hot water)

Apply a hair pack or intensive hair conditioner

Allow it to take effect for a few minutes.

Rinse again, until you are sure there is no remaining soap.

Synthetic-hair brushes

Clean your synthetic-hair brushes with a grease-removing product, such as washing-up liquid.

Rinse them in lukewarm water and ensure there is no remaining soap.

TIP: Always leave your brushes to dry on a towel; never let them dry vertically in a cup, as in this case the water would enter the brush’s handle and ruin it, besides which the hair will part.

New sponges and powder puffs

Buy new sponges and powder puffs. They are very accessible and you will feel as though you are trying out a whole range of products for the first time.

TOILETRY BAG

Wash your toiletry bag in a washing machine, if the material and shape allow it. Otherwise clean it with a damp sponge and eliminate all left-over pencil shavings, broken pencils, bits of make up, etc.

If you can, buy yourself a new toiletry bag with separate compartments so as to keep all your make up products in order. They’ll last longer that way.

Acquire small, transparent toiletry bags to store your cotton wool, sponges, and powder puffs, keeping things more hygienic.

As a rule of thumb, if you have fair skin, you should go with soft pinks and corals to match the pinkish tone of your skin. Apricot would be a nice lipstick color too if you are fair-skinned.

However, never ever apply the sample lipstick directly to your lips. That is very yucky. Instead of putting the lipstick directly to your lips, just swipe it against your finger or your palm.

There are some stores where it would not be possible for you to take a swipe of the sample lipstick on your skin because the sample lipstick is not available. In that case, what you need to do is to just hold the product against your face and take a look at yourself at the mirror. That will help you determine if the lipstick color is just right for the tone of your skin.

Do Not Stick to Just Lipstick

When you shop for makeup, do not limit yourself to just the lipstick. Get yourself a few lip liners as well. Lip liners are very helpful because they trace the natural line of your lips and prevent the lipstick from bleeding away from your lips. Take care to buy lip liners that are a shade lighter than the lipstick colors you will blend them with. You can also go for a nude lip liner if you think figuring out what color of lip liner would match your lipstick color is just too much work for you.

Another tool that could come handy when you are applying makeup is a lipstick brush. A lipstick brush is good if you are the type who wants to put on just a thin layer of lipstick instead of slathering it across your lips. A lipstick brush is also more hygienic than dabbing your fingers on the lipstick and then rubbing it on your lips. In using a lipstick brush, you minimize the need for kissing tissue to get rid of excess lipstick on your lips, as well as to prevent it from getting to your teeth.

Got the Wrong Lipstick Color?

Sometimes, even though you are sure that the color of the lipstick that you got from the store is the right one for your skin tone, there are times that when you actually get to use it, you would find that it is not really the right shade for you, or you simply do not like the way it looks against your skin. Do not despair, though. You can still make use of that lipstick. You do not have to waste money by throwing it away.

What you do in this situation is to get your lipstick brush and blend this unwanted lipstick color with your other lipsticks. In this way, you would be able to create a shade of color that would be more to your liking. You get a new shade of lipstick without buying a new one or throwing one away.

And yes, choose whatever colors you like - the following is about application only.Applying foundationFoundation can be applied with the fingers or with a makeup sponge - or both. Dot liquid foundation on your T-zone and, using your fingers or a makeup sponge, blend the makeup out toward the hair line, cheeks, and jawline. If using a cream or wet-dry foundation, glide a makeup-coated sponge along the T-zone and blend outward.If your foundation looks heavy or blotchy - regardless of whether it was applied with a finger or a sponge - run a makeup sponge across the skin to soak up any excess product.Concealer can be dotted on skin that's either clean or foundation-prepped. Using a makeup brush or finger, apply a generous coat of concealer to pimples, broken blood vessels, dark spots, scars, under eye circles, dark eyelids, or other skin glitches you'd like to camouflage.Gently tap the area with a clean finger to blend the product and remove excess. Be careful not to rub concealer onto skin - this wipes off makeup and creates a smeared, messy finish. Contour and highlighters come in cream, gel, stick, liquid, and powder formulas. This means that if you use cream blush, contour, highlighter, and/or eye-shadow formulas, these need to be applied before you reach for the face powder. Why? Because it is nearly impossible to get cream products to blend well on top of a powdered surface.This is because face powder creates a barrier between creamy products and powder­based cosmetics, which are often streaky when they are applied, and have a tendency to be absorbed if you put them directly on top of a foundation or a concealer.
